As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, it’s also time to slowly transition your skin care routine from light, summer basics to nourishing fall and winter essentials. Using natural products in your skin care routine allows for a gentle transition between seasons with minimal and nourishing ingredients, and no harsh fragrances or surfactants. In this blog, we will share some of our top tips and recommendations for transitioning to your fall and winter skin rituals for the healthiest, glowiest skin this season.
What Should You Focus On?
In the colder months, your skin is more susceptible to dryness and irritation due to dryer weather conditions, as well as dry indoor air caused by central heating. Your skin can also become more sensitive in the colder months, so it’s crucial to use gentle products that work to strengthen and restore your skin barrier.
Focusing on hydration and moisturization is the key to healthy, glowy skin, and well-hydrated skin is able to heal more quickly from breakouts and irritation. It is also important to incorporate a gentle exfoliant into your routine to remove dead skin cells and build up for brighter-looking skin.
Cleanser
In the summertime, using a foaming facial cleanser that deeply cleanses the skin is usually ideal in order to remove excess oil and sweat. In the fall and winter, using a gentler, more moisturizing cleanser is the way to go! We love recommending a cream-based cleanser in the colder months. They break down and remove dirt, oil and impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils. They are more moisturizing and gentler than foaming cleansers and work really well for dry, sensitive, or aging skin.
Our Green Tea facial Cleanser is our go-to for those who are on the dry, sensitive side or if you’re prone to irritation and redness. It’s formulated with lavender and chamomile to soothe the skin and antioxidant-rich green tea extract. For a little extra oomph, our Citrus AHA Facial Cleanser is another moisturizing cream cleanser that also offers a gentle exfoliation. The citrus AHA extracts help to gently resurface your skin without being stripping or irritating, leaving you glowy and bright.
For those who are more oily and acne prone and maybe still want a deep cleanse without feeling tight and dry, try opting for a facial cleansing bar instead! Our cleansing bars are made with shea butter, so they are much softer on the skin than the foaming cleansers, but their clay and charcoal ingredients will still pull dirt and impurities from deep in your pores. We’d recommend our Pink Clay Facial Cleansing Bar for combo skin and our Charcoal Facial Cleansing Bar for oily skin.
Toner
Toner is a hugely underrated step but can make a world of difference in your skin. Toners are formulated to help prep your skin for the rest of your routine, tighten pores, address skin concerns like acne, and add a layer of hydration to your skin. Our favourite for the colder months is our Rich Rose Facial Toner. It’s made with DMAE and MSM to reduce inflammation and redness, and the rose water base is very hydrating and soothing to the skin.
If you have very sensitive skin or are prone to rosacea, our Rosacea Care Facial Toner is our best recommendation. It’s formulated with lavender and chamomile to soothe irritated skin and reduce redness, and carrot seed oil to heal chapped skin.
Moisturizer
A good moisturizer is the final step in a nourishing skin care routine. Your moisturizer seals in the hydration from your toner and serums and works to protect and strengthen your skin barrier. A great ingredient to look for in your winter skin care is vitamin C. Vitamin C helps to improve your skin’s collagen production, and it works to brighten dark spots and hyperpigmentation, resulting in a glowy, smooth complexion. Our Vitamin C Facial Cream is our most nourishing cream, and its rich consistency makes it the perfect choice for the fall and winter seasons.
If you are prone to sensitivity and redness, or if you have very dry skin, our Healing Hemp Facial Cream is your new best friend. Hemp seed oil is very healing and nourishing for the skin, and combined with hydrating pro-vitamin B5 and healing carrot seed oil, you can kiss chapped and cracked skin goodbye!
The transition to your fall and winter skin care routine doesn’t have to be confusing. Maintaining a simple routine using products with natural, nourishing ingredients is the best choice for your skin, and the environment. As the weather cools down, it’s a good idea to slowly switch out your products one at a time, so as to not overwhelm your skin all at once.
