What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are natural compounds that have been taken from plants. The concentrated compound maintains the plant’s scent and flavor. Once the oil is extracted, it is inhaled by the user. Depending on the oil, the scent can have many different effects on the user. Some essential oil users also apply the oil directly to the skin, but unless you are skilled at diluting the oils or have purchased an oil made to be applied on the skin, exercise caution.

What Are They Used For?

Our thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and mood can be altered by the sense of smell, which is why aromatherapy is so effective. Here are some common essential oils and their top uses.

Lemon: skin care, mood booster, antibacterial

Lavender: One of the most useful! An anti-inflammatory, stress relief, immune booster, and anti-bacterial

Tea tree: Used as an antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and alleviate cold symptoms

Eucalyptus: Used to clear airways, boost immune system, and as an anti-inflammatory

Rosemary: Used to decrease stress levels, increase blood pressure, and boost your immune system

Peppermint: Used to alleviate headaches, improve concentration, and soothe nausea

What Is a Diffuser?

An essential oil diffuser is a tool used to release the scent of the oil into the air. There are multiple types of diffusers to choose from. Before you choose your diffuser, you will want to do your research to decide how you will be primarily using your oils. Check out a few of the more common diffusers below to see which one will best suit you!

Ceramic tea light diffuser: Best for small areas, ceramic diffusers simply require a drop or two of oil in water. A tealight candle is lit underneath and gently warms the water and essential oil and to encourage the release of essential oil into the air.

Ultrasonic diffuser: Ultrasonic diffusers are plug in electrical devices that push the essential oils into the air using a small disc that creates vibrations. These vibrations cause the water and essential oils to mist into the air. This spreads the essential oils while adding a small amount of moisture to the air.
