How to Correctly Apply Facial Care Products
Introduction to Facial Care
We all know that having a healthy skin care routine is essential for preventing premature wrinkles and enhancing our skin's natural glow. We’re all familiar with the basic routine of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing, and everyone has favourite products they swear by.
But did you know the order in which you use your skin care products can affect how well they work? Time to discuss how to correctly apply face care products to ensure you are reaping all of the benefits of the products you're using!
Why Apply Products a Certain Way?
Many of the products you use in your skin care regime contain active compounds that benefit your skin. This is particularly true if you use natural/organic skincare products that contain plant-based phenols and active ingredients. Ideally, you want these active compounds to be as close to your skin as possible so that they can get absorbed properly. If you're applying thick cream before your active serum, chances are not many of the active compounds will be absorbed.
How to Apply Your Face Care Products Correctly
Your skin care routine should be tailored to your skin type. Many beauty experts recommend first identifying issues that you want to address and then choosing various products to solve these issues.
For instance, for oily skin, make sure you use products that moisturize your skin without leaving a greasy layer. Facial oils, such as Nezza Naturals Ultimate Facial Oil, can be used to hydrate any skin type without leaving a residue. If you have blemishes or fine lines, using a product that has vitamin C to reduce their appearance is a great idea.
Also, make sure that you're applying your products gently, without excessive rubbing or scraping. It may feel nice to really scrub your skin with an exfoliant, but all you're doing is potentially damaging your skin and speeding up the aging process.
Which Order to Apply Products In
There are so many products—each promising great results. If you've bought a lot of them, it can be difficult to know which ones to apply first, particularly in tricky cases like facial oil and facial serum. A good rule of thumb when it comes to using facial creams, oils, and serums is to apply them from thinnest to thickest, and use the one with the most active ingredients first.
Many people do ask us what a toner does and when to use it. We recommend to use toners before serums or moisturizers. They have anti-inflammatory properties and can relax the skin and allow moisturizer to penetrate the skin easier. They are excellent for oily/acne prone skin, large pore, blackheads and many skin conditions like rosacea.
Facial serums are usually designed to be lightweight and are packed with actives, making them a great choice to apply before anything else. By making sure you use them directly after cleansing, you can ensure that the active compounds have plenty of time to sink in.
Then, depending on your skin type, you can apply your moisturizing facial serum or facial cream. Some people, particularly those with oily or normal skin, can get away with a light moisturizing serum, while other people will need a more intensive facial cream.
Finally, a facial oil should be one of the last things you use, as they are generally thick and are designed to be impermeable. So anything that comes on top of a facial oil will most likely not get absorbed into the skin at all.
Application Tips and Tricks
There are many things you can do to maximize the benefits you get from your face care program. First, make sure you apply serums and actives directly after cleansing, while your skin is still moist.
More serum isn't necessarily better. Use roughly a dime-size dollop of serum and apply using your first two fingers. Massage it in gently without pulling too hard on your skin. Then wait a couple of minutes before continuing with your face cream and sunscreen application.
