Essential Oils, Diffusers, and the Benefits of Diffusion
Essential oils have become extremely popular over the last few years. With an increased interest in natural products to aid in relieving aches and pains, essential oils are a go-to for ailments like nausea, sore muscles, headaches, and stress. If you have yet to reap the benefits of essential oils, read on to learn about the different options of essential oils, diffusers, and the benefits of diffusion.
What are they?
Essential oils are natural compounds that have been taken from plants. The concentrated compound maintains the plant’s scent and flavor. Once the oil is extracted, it is inhaled by the user. Depending on the oil, the scent can have many different effects on the user. Some essential oil users also apply the oil directly to the skin, but unless you are skilled at diluting the oils or have purchased an oil made to be applied on the skin, exercise caution.
How can they be used?
Most essential oils are used in aromatherapy. Our thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and mood can be altered by the sense of smell, which is why aromatherapy is so effective.
Lemon oil: Used for skin care, mood booster, and as an antibacterial product.
Lavender: One of the most useful oils, lavender is used for an anti-inflammatory, stress relief, immune booster, and anti-bacterial
Tea tree oil: Used as an antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and alleviate cold symptoms
Eucalyptus: Used to clear airways, boost immune system, and as an anti-inflammatory
Rosemary oil: Used to decrease stress levels, increase blood pressure, and boost your immune system
Peppermint oil: Used to alleviate headaches, improve concentration, and soothe nausea
What is a diffuser?
An essential oil diffuser is a tool used to release the scent of the oil into the air. This is the practice of aromatherapy. There are multiple types of diffusers to choose from. Before you choose your diffuser, you will want to do your research to decide how you will be primarily using your oils. Check out a few of the more common diffusers below to see which one will best suit you!
Ceramic: Best for small areas, ceramic diffusers simply require a drop or two of oil. The oil evaporates into the air, spreading the scent.
Reed: With a reed diffuser, the oil makes its way up the rattan sticks and fill the room with the scent. These diffusers also offer a spa-like decor piece to a room!
Electric: Instead of using heat, electric diffusers utilize fans blow the oil to disperse the scent in the room.
Candle: Candle diffusers are best if you want the smell, but aren’t necessarily going for the other benefits of the essential oils. Because these diffusers use heat, sometimes the properties of the oil are changed during the warming process.
Ultrasonic: Ultrasonic diffusers have a dual purpose. The vibrations sent into the water create a mist to spread the scent, also adding moisture to the air.
We have briefly touched on the benefits of some of the specific essential oils, but the diffusion itself has benefits. As far as health goes, keeping a diffuser nearby can promote a more restful sleep, help with respiratory ailments, boost the immune system, and alleviate general pain relief. Diffusers can also benefit mental health by improving one’s mood, reducing stress and anxiety, and boosting concentration and memory. Another benefit that you may not have thought of? Certain oils can also repel insects, making them a great outdoor summer addition to your patio!
