The Benefits of Clay for Your Skin and
How to Choose the Right One
Clay + Skin = Care
Have you ever heard the quote; “Knowledge is power” ?
Even though debate still rages about where this quote first popped up in history, it certainly applies to many areas in life, wouldn’t you agree?
One such area I’m most interested in sharing with you today is your skincare!
Most people don’t realize that acquiring as much knowledge about the ingredients in their skincare is the very key to actually finding products that will work!
It’s not about trusting claims on skin care packaging…
And it’s not even about the reviews…
The more you know, the better!
Funny enough, not knowing as much as you can about the ingredients in your skincare is what stops you from being able to properly read the ingredient list on packaging, stops you from knowing whether a product is going to be right for you, and from knowing which reviews to actually trust!
If you don’t know much about ingredients in skincare, then you’re likely going to be struggling to find the right combination of products for your unique skin.
One of the quickest ways to take action is of course to learn about these ingredients, and we’re on a mission to empower you!
Here in our latest blog post, we’re peeling back the layers of our favourite ingredients for healthy skin… clay!
Fad or Fame?
Sheet masks were all the rage of 2017 and this year we’ve been seeing some crazy new face mask trends such as the ever popular bubble mask, which looks like a whole lot of fun (if not a little terrifying!), but how long before this mask just becomes another passing fad?
If there’s one type of facial mask that seems to be sticking around, it’s clay masks, and the reason is simple; they provide real, visible results. You can always trust an ingredient that has been around for a while and clays have been used for centuries to cleanse and purify the skin.
What is clay? What are the benefits for my skin?
Clays are completely natural earthy materials, comprised of finely ground soil or rock that has been dried or ionized by the sun. Clays offer many excellent benefits for the skin due to their high antioxidant content as well as array of powerful minerals including magnesium, calcium, silica and zinc to provide the skin with a gorgeous elixir of nutrients that deliver almost instant results.
Clays are well-known for their ability to draw deep down toxins out of the skin, helping to keep the skin clear and healthy with a radiant glow. Before you dismiss clays as a product for teens, because you may well be past the acne stage, we want to let you know that clays come in many different colours, some of which are better suited for dry or aging skin.
Clays also help to stimulate blood flow, helping to boost collagen production, which is what every woman in her 30s and beyond is looking for!
Which clay is best for YOU?
French pink clay
This one is for firming and toning the skin and will leave it feeling as soft as baby’s bottom!
Try this clay on the face, as well as on any areas of the body prone to sagging such as the thighs, arms or stomach.
You’ll feel confident to rock that new bathing suit all summer long!
French green clay
This is one you may be more familiar with! French green clay is perfect for more oily skin types, as it has a wonderful purifying effect on the skin and will draw pesky toxins out and away. It has natural powerful exfoliating properties to help unclog the pores and prevent and reduce the severity of blemishes. Healing properties help to reduce redness and inflammation. If your skin is quite sensitive, then you may want to do a patch test on your neck or inner arm to be sure your skin can tolerate it before applying to your entire face.
Australian green clay
This one is different from French green clay in that it is great for all skin types and not just oily/acne skin. Australian green clay helps to re-balance oil production, reduce impurities and infuse the skin with important minerals to keep it healthy, clear and glowing.
Rhassoul red clay
This is a multi-purpose clay that is just as wonderful for acne as it it for dry/aging skin. Sourced from the beautiful Atlas mountains in Morocco, this one is also known as red clay, rhassoul clay and red Moroccan clay. Rhassoul clay helps to deeply cleanse the skin, balance sebum levels and soften and hydrate dry, flaky skin.
Kaolin white clay
Kaolin white clay has all the benefits you can expect from a clay, namely drawing impurities out of the skin, controlling oil and adding minerals into the pores, however the white clay is especially known to be wonderful for sensitive skin types.
If you want to enjoy the benefits of a clay, but have a sensitive skin then this one may be just right for you!
How to use clay
Clays are easier to use than you think and a whole lotta fun to whip up!
- Simply add some water to form a paste and apply in a generous layer all over your face and neck.
- Leave to dry for at least 20-30 minutes.
- You will feel a tightening effect and the clay will change to a lighter colour once fully dry.
- Rinse with warm water or use a damp washcloth to gently wipe the excess off before patting dry.
- Follow up with the rest of your regular skincare routine.
- Voila!

What people are saying about our products...
I have really sensitive skin, and this is the only mask I use! It works great when I see a spot developing, as well as on larger problem areas. Right after using it, my skin is soft and any oiliness or redness I had before is gone. It doesn't dry out my skin, and is perfect for daily use (especially in the summer when I have to use sunscreen and need a little extra help keeping my pores clean from the extra oil). The best part is that I've had it for ages and am not even half way through the container - definitely a worthy investment. I recommend this clay to everyone who sees the container in my bathroom or asks me about my skin care regime!

I cannot rave about this clay enough! I purchased this after a visit to Victoria and the fabulous Nezza Naturals store. The young lady in the shop recommended this for my son who has struggled with mild to moderate acne... This clay applied as a mask works insanely well! He and I can both see the results after using the clay the night before... when he uses it regularly it pretty much gets rid of all the pimples and clears up his skin! When he slacks... they come back! He now comes to me asking to have the mask put on... that's how much it has helped! Nothing else has ever worked like this! I even use it too once a week or so just to keep my skin beautifully clear. Highly, highly recommended for oily blemish prone skin... but... also works to keep combo skin clear and bright looking!
